Help Us Save The Gym!

On June 19, 2007, the CYAC and its kids are taking on their toughest opponent yet: City Hall. We need you in our corner.

On June 19, the City Council is going to have a public hearing and declare most of National City blighted (everything west of I-805). This means they think that our homes and businesses are no good. This is an insult to everyone who lives and works here and it s an insult to the gym, which is working so hard for the kids of National City.

The City wants to declare most of National City blighted so it can take away people s small businesses and give their land to rich private developers and big companies like Home Depot. They re not planning on taking any homes, but they re taking away the American Dream of many entrepreneurs and skilled workers.

In the gym s case, the City wants to take the gym and give it to a private developer to build expensive condos. You ve probably seen the sign outside.

We re not going anywhere. We ve worked too hard for what we have, and we re going to do what we teach the kids to do: stand up for what is right

In our view, it is wrong to take someone s property and just give it to someone else for that person s benefit. All over California cities take property from ordinary people and give it to rich developers. We re not just stepping into the ring for ourselves, we re stepping into the ring for everyone who faces the loss of a cherished home, business, farm or church.

Here s what we need you to do:

  • Write a letter to the city council saying that you oppose their redevelopment plan. Be sure to say in your letter that you want your letter part of the record of the June 19th hearing. Send the letter yourself or leave it with the gym and we ll file it.
  • Attend the hearing on June 19th at City Hall at 6pm. It will help us if there are a lot of people there supporting us. You can even address the city council.
  • Attend the Rally To Save The CYAC at 5:00 p.m. in Kimball Park right behind the CYAC. Encourage your friends and neighbors and fellow church members to join you. Exercise your constitutional right to oppose injustice!
  • Drop by the front desk to pick up a sheet with some guidelines on how to write your letter. You don t have to type it and handwriting is ok.
